What is Adrenal Fatigue?

The National Endocrine Society states that “adrenal fatigue” is a term to describe symptoms in men and women experiencing long-term mental, emotional, and physical stress.

In theory, adrenal fatigue may be the result of the adrenal glands’ (small walnut sized organs on top of each kidney) inability to keep up with cortisol production (fight or flight hormone) with long-term/prolonged physical, emotional stress or both. This may potentially affect sex hormone production in men and specifically in peri-menopausal and menopausal women.

Symptoms suggestive of adrenal fatigue may include:

  • Abdominal weight gain in men or women

  • Fatigue which is usually chronic and debilitating driving the need for stimulant or caffeine use to get through the day

  • Patient’s often report “never feeling rested” despite adequate sleep

  • Sugar and salt cravings

  • Low blood pressure values

Diagnostic Testing

There is no definitive test for Adrenal Fatigue. Lab testing for cortisol levels (serum or saliva) may aid in diagnosing this disorder.

Management is supportive care and not curative. Treatments may include lifestyle change recommendations that include: stress reduction, addressing nutritional deficits, activity adjustment, and supplementation to support adrenal health.
